Church History:
Christ United Baptist Church was organized on August 9, 1987. Sixty-seven believers met at the Hickory Police Academy building on Lake Hickory to establish a new church.
The first service of the church was on Sunday, August 16, 1987 at Wilson’s Florist with Brother Larry Wittenberg leading the worship. It was at this meeting the church voted to call Reverend M. Phillip King as their Pastor. Plans were also made to purchase a permanent facility for worship, and on December 1, 1987 the Church closed on the purchase of this property.
Since it’s inception, the Church has been led by seven pastors:
Rev. M. Phillip King: 1987 – 1989
Rev. Tom Stephens: 1989 -1994
Rev. Robert Newton: 1996 – 1997
Rev. Bobby Sherrill: 1997 – 2001
Rev. Victor Gray: 2002 – 2009
Rev. Todd Rudisill: 2009 – 2018
Rev. David Stikeleather: 2018 – Present
There have also been special people over the years that have served as interim pastors and worship leaders, Joann Fowler, Dr. Smoot Baker, Rev. E.B. Elmore, John and June Marr, Rev. James Hester, Jason White, and Rudy Hayes.
God has truly blessed Christ United Baptist Church and we look with anticipation for what He has planned for our future! As we move into another new year of ministry we covenant to pray for one another and reach out to our community with Christ.
